For many of us, this is all we have left.May We Return, is a prayer spoken in unison, for all those who no longer feel they have a home to return to. The ongoing war (and the genocide that it has perpetuated) in Sudan has seen the displacement of over 7.9 million people and counting. The artwork in this exhibition holds on to the belief that we will one day go back. The work explores through a range of different materials, the notion of people reuniting with each other, with their fruit trees, with the land, with themselves. In times of great loss and darkness, this collection of artworks humbly gesture towards hope. The maximalist and colorful visual language is inspired by the visuals that once colored home before the war, and that we hope will too return when it is all over. This exhibition holds closely our love, our faith—our hope. For many of us, this is all we have left.Sarah Elawad is a Sudanese Artist, born and raised in London UK and currently residing in Brooklyn, New York. She received her MFA in Graphic Design from the Yale School of Art in 2023 and her BFA from VCUArts Qatar in 2019. Her art work explores themes of her own culture, identity, and interpersonal relationships. Sarah’s visual practice is collage-like, kitsch and experimental, encompassing a diverse range of materials such as experimental print, garments, textiles, video art, installations, and more. Sarah’s work has been exhibited internationally, most recently in Istanbul, NYC, Amsterdam, and Shanghai. She has also participated in various art book fairs around the world and her work has been included in the artist book collection in the Watson Library at The MET in New York, The British National Library in London, the Asia Art Archive in Brooklyn, and others.
