Buy Nothing Day Coat Exchange

November 29, 2024 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

On November 29th – the busiest day in the American retail calendar and the unofficial start of the international Christmas-shopping season – thousands of activists and concerned citizens in 65 countries will take a 24-hour consumer detox as part of the  annual Buy Nothing Day, a global phenomenon that originated in Vancouver, Canada. Some see it as an escape from the marketing mind games and the frantic consumer binge that has come to characterize the holiday season, and our culture in general. Others use it to expose the environmental and ethical consequences of over-consumption.  In Providence as part of International Buy Nothing Day, we hold a life-affirming winter coat exchange on the lawn of the State House directly across from Providence Place mall.

To donate a coat prior to the 29th go to www.ricoatexchange.org  or bring coats to the State House lawn on the 29th. One can also  donate clean, gently-used or new:  scarves, gloves/mittens, winter hats, sweatshirts/sweaters.  We serve adults and children.

Need a coat?

Come to our donation site on November 29th on the RI State House Lawn (facing the Providence Place Mall). 9 AM – 1 PM. Select one coat per person / family member.  Rain/snow site: Gloria Dei Church, Hayes St. across from the Mall.

Things to know:

  • There are no questions asked. If you need a coat, take a coat.

  • Families with children are served first for their safety and to create an easier shopping experience for our younger “shoppers.”

  • Everything is free.

  • Bags are not allowed.

  • One coat per person.

  • The respect and safety of all volunteers and attendees is extremely important. Please listen to volunteers if they provide instructions on site.
