Davarian L. Baldwin, “In the Shadow of the Ivory Tower: Rethinking the Community Engagement Model of Higher Education”

October 15, 2024 @ 4:00 pm - 5:15 pm

Guided by his latest book, In the Shadow of the Ivory Tower, Baldwin will discuss the promises and pitfalls of university-based community engagement. This conversation explores how the largely curriculum and “outreach” model of engagement must contend with the political and economic harms of the university beyond the campus gates. With Brown’s reach in Providence as a case study, Baldwin will discuss how his Smart Cities Research Lab works to build out a more robust vision of community engagement where the campus vision is more directly shaped by the conditions of the community where it sits.SpeakerDavarian L. Baldwin is an internationally recognized scholar, author, and public advocate. He is the Paul E. Raether Distinguished Professor of American Studies and Founding Director of the Smart Cities Research Lab at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Baldwin is the award-winning author of several books, most recently, In The Shadow of the Ivory Tower: How Universities Are Plundering Our Cities. He also served as the consultant and text author for The World of the Harlem Renaissance: A Jigsaw Puzzle (2022).
