Defending Democracy in Rhode Island Schools: Understanding and Responding to Right-Wing Influence on School Committees

Join Teach Truth Rhode Island Coalition for a critical discussion about the growing right-wing influence on school committees across Rhode Island.

Recent national headlines have highlighted how MAGA-aligned groups are challenging public education through book bans, the dismantling of DEI initiatives, and policies targeting transgender students. While Rhode Island is traditionally considered a liberal state, the 2024 election resulted in Republican majorities in many cities and towns. From Johnston to Richmond, from Smithfield to Westerly, and even in Providence, right-wing members and candidates have begun proposing book bans, exclusionary policies against transgender students, and disrupting public participation through Open Meetings violations.

This crucial conversation will help attendees:
* Recognize concerning patterns in school committee actions
* Learn effective response strategies
* Develop tools to protect public education in their communities
* Build support for inclusive, equitable education
