We know many of you have heard about the recent Superior Court decision between the City of Providence and the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) related to the Providence Public Schools (PPSD) turnaround initiative.
The City of Providence may be ordered to pay tens of millions of dollars to RIDE in the middle of the year when its budget has been finalized and departments are already providing essential services.
While CLPVD (Community Libraries Providence) is not a City department – we are an independent not-for-profit organization – we rely on funds from the City of Providence to keep our doors open.
We are working to ensure that all stakeholders, and specifically RIDE , recognize the crucial importance of sustaining our funding to keep our libraries open and our programs active. Both libraries and schools are vital to the city’s children and families. We sent RIDE Commissioner Infante-Green a letter to ask her to be willing to come to a collaborative solution so that libraries can remain an accessible, essential resource for all.
You can read the full letter here in English and Spanish.
How you can help: step one This situation not only impacts our libraries, but all of you who use our services, benefit from our programs, and rely on us as a part of your daily lives. We need your help. We ask that you please reach out to the Commissioner angelica.infantegreen@ride.ri.gov in the next 24 hours and make your voice heard! Let her know how important CLPVD is to you and your family. You can use this suggested template for inspiration. |
