Splendor of Florence Presents:
Sott’Acqua – A Tale of Two Cities Underwater
Get ready to experience the Sott’Acqua Festival, presented by Splendor of Florence in partnership with the Downtown Providence Park Network. Taking place from November 9th-17th, 2024, in Downtown Providence, this free event showcases the compelling stories of Florence and Providence, two cities transformed by devastating floods. With a sophisticated blend of music, culinary arts, photo exhibitions, interactive tours, and educational programs, the festival highlights the resilience of these historic cities while addressing the urgent challenges posed by climate change.
Highlights include a November 16th concert by the Rhode Island Philharmonic with guest opera singers from Florence’s Accademia di Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the signing of a new Friendship Pact, and a powerful photography exhibit at the Grace Church Pavilion, featuring iconic images of the Florence and Providence floods. In collaboration with Save The Bay, educational activities will teach attendees about Providence’s waterways, the hurricane barrier, and its crucial role in protecting the city from rising sea levels and future storms.
Iconic Photography Exhibit at Grace Church The Sott’Aqua will present an exhibition at the Pavilion of Grace Episcopal Church, featuring iconic photographs taken by the late Life Magazine photographer David Lees, documenting the 1966 flood in Florence, alongside images from the Providence Journal capturing the aftermath of Hurricane Carol in downtown Providence in 1954. In addition, eight of the most dramatic photographs from the exhibit will be on display in the lobby of The Atrium at 100 Westminster Street
