I’m a manager here, and I’ve been working here since 2007.
I came into it because I love to read, but there’s so much more to the job than that. I talk to so many people, I hear so many things about their lives. In the dead of winter, people are kind of depressed, and I know what that’s like. Some people come to the desk, and it’s like the stream of consciousness coming out of them, and it’s interesting. You can relate to them a lot, different types of people, but we are all kind of feeling the same thing.
This is Yaya. A few years ago, my co-worker, Donna, had an African Gray who was home with her all the time, and I said, “Bring him in,” because parrots are very intelligent and it’s good to get them out, get them to socialize. Unfortunately he passed away a couple of years ago. And then the opportunity came where Donna could get another bird who needed a home, so she took him, Yaya, and he comes in every day with her, unless there’s a day where he really doesn’t want to come—and that’s rare.
The minute she picks up the carrier, he’s running out of the cage and jumping in. He likes to just come here. I mean, it looks like he’s not really doing anything, but I think he likes to people-watch—and he takes naps like he’s doing right now—but he likes the attention, honestly.
