To the Editor:
As a candidate for the Providence School Board, a resident and a former teacher I am concerned about the lack of information on Providence Schools Organizational Chart. The chart lists the 50 members of the Superintendent’s team. And that’s it.
Unlike the Boston Public Schools Department Directory which writes 1. Who We Are and 2. What We Do. Providence keeps what they do and who they are a secret. In a city where 65% of the students are Hispanic, I believe that their parents would appreciate a welcome and a description of what the departments do and how to contact them.
In a city that has 16 public charter schools that welcomes new students with an overview of their goals and philosophy, I am not surprised that families are choosing Charter rather than traditional public school. As a member of the Providence School Board, I will work to make traditional public schools creative thoughtful houses of learning; schools in which teachers encourage students to use their imaginations, and students respect themselves and their teachers. Music schools, writing schools, dancing schools, drawing and painting schools; schools in which everyone becomes smarter because knowledge is shared. And finally, a school district office that provides support, and not control. Schools will draw from the community so that schools have social workers, mental health counselors so students and teachers do not have to suffer in silence.
