Phyllis F. Araujo Obituary

Phyllis F. Araujo, 83, passed away on Monday, December 22, 2025 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center.

Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Mary (Fortes) Gomes.

 

Mrs. Araujo was a teacher’s assistant for the Providence School Department and also for Bishop McVinney Regional School before she retired. Prior to that she worked at the Salvation Army Day Care Center in Providence where she ran year long programs for children from all communities. Mrs. Araujo was also a 10th Ward Committee Chairperson in Providence, was a graduate of the Community College of Rhode Island, served on several boards and committees and was a tireless advocate for children’s educational and social programs. She was a lifelong member of St Michaels Parish where she ran religious programs and was a passionate and very active member of the Catholic Church.

 

She leaves two children, Christine McCoy and her husband William and Antonio Araujo, III and his wife Gina, one brother, John Fortes, three sisters, Gwendolyn Fortes, Julia Rollins and Beatrice Gomes and five grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Bernard Fortes and Henry Fortes.
