Joan Peterson Obituary

A beloved mother, grandmother and friend, Joan Peterson, 74, of Providence, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026, surrounded by the love of her loving family. Born on November 23, 1951, Joan was a proud lifelong Rhode Islander whose kindness, strength, and generous spirit touched the lives of so many.

She shared a deep and lasting love with her late husband, Michael A. Peterson, and kept his memory close to her heart always.

Above all, Joan was devoted to her family. She was a devoted and loving mother to Bruce Hyder and the late Elizabeth Mottram and Brenda Medina. She was also a cherished grandmother to five grandchildren, who brought her endless joy, pride, and some of her happiest moments. She is survived by her brother, Nicolas Demoranville, and was predeceased by her siblings Paul S. Hardy Sr., Matthew Demoranville, Mary “Beth” Andreoli, Myrtle “Sis” O’Brien, and Hazel Fritsche.

Joan gave much of her life in service to others. For many years, she worked for the City of Providence in the Archives Department as a City Clerk, where she was known for her dedication, care, and respect for the city’s history. She took great pride in her work and earned the admiration of colleagues and residents alike. Her commitment to her community extended far beyond her profession.

As Chairwoman of the 12th Ward Democratic Committee, she devoted countless hours to advocating for her neighbors, helping those in need, and making sure others felt seen, heard, and supported.

She also generously gave her time to the Rhode Island Donation Exchange Program, a cause that meant so much to her. Joan will be remembered for her sharp wit, warm heart, fierce loyalty, and the genuine compassion she showed to everyone around her. She had a way of making people feel cared for, and her kindness left a lasting mark on all who knew her.

Joan’s presence will be deeply missed by her family, friends, colleagues, and the many people whose lives were better because of her love and service. Her memory will live on in the family she treasured and in the community she helped strengthen for generations to come.

Funeral arrangements and services will be announced by the family at a later date.
