M. Joan Beauchemin (Gruca), 81, of Providence, passed away Friday October 18th, 2024. She was the wife of the late Donald A. Beauchemin. Born in Warren, RI, she was a daughter of the late Edward, Sr. and Laura (Mello) Gruca. Although Joan was born in Warren, the stories of her childhood revolve around the many years she spent on her maternal grandparents’ farm in Rehoboth, MA. It was there she practiced Portuguese with her beloved grandparents, and lived a rural, simple lifestyle, without electricity, even in the late 1940s.
An industrious and hardworking woman, Joan worked in various careers throughout her life. She was employed for many years by the American Mathematical Society, where she fostered lifelong friendships. Her career included many years as a lifeguard and in charge of children, providing a safe and loving environment for them to grow and thrive. She blossomed the most in the company of children.
She is survived by her cherished son, Christopher Beauchemin and his wife, Marisa; her two adored grandchildren, Lucas and Molly, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren, especially Tracey Arnold, who was such a comfort to Joan after Don’s passing.
Joan found immense joy in spending time with family, especially her grandchildren. Her home was always filled with love, the delicious aromas of her cooking, and Popsicles – no matter the season.
Joan was a character. Her spirit was mischievous to the core, always doing things her way, despite the advice and caution, her husband, son, doctor, or friend offered. That’s just the way she was. And to know her was to love her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Tuesday November 5th at St Raymond Church, 1240 North Main St. Providence. Burial will be private and visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
