Nora J. Howard-Gitlin

Howard-Gitlin, Nora J., 73, died Saturday, January 17, 2026 at home. She was the beloved wife of Louis Gitlin for 48 years. Born in Tampa, FL, a daughter of the late Bertram and Zelda (Krellenstein) Howard, she had lived in Providence, previously living in New Bedford. Nora was a member of Temple Emanu-El and a former member of Tifereth Israel. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Tufts and a Master’s from Columbia University.

Devoted mother of Zachary Howard Gitlin of Providence, RI and Ariel Rebecca Gitlin of Brooklyn, NY. Dear sister of Dr. Jack A. Howard and his wife, Leslie, of South Dartmouth, MA and Alan B. Howard and his wife, Patti, of Waccabuc, NY. Cherished pet parent of Waldo.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in Temple Emanu-El, 99 Taft Avenue, Providence. Shiva will be observed at the Gitlin residence, 65 Emeline St., Providence, Tuesday, January 20, 2026 following burial until 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 21, 2026, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., and Thursday, January 22, 2026, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., with minyan at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to House of Hope and the Kosher Food Pantry.
