H. Avery | Providence Fringe Theatre Festival
“I wrote the play, Do Not Resuscitate, after reading a chapter in Fearlessly Different by Mickey Rowe, where he talked about ‘quality-adjusted life years,’ which is a concept that attempts to measure a disabled person’s year of life compared to that of an able-bodied person. Which is completely made up and arbitrary and not something that can actually be measured. And unfortunately, a lot of doctors during the COVID pandemic used this as justification for issuing ‘Do Not Resuscitate’ orders to disabled people. We see this time and time again with doctors prioritizing able-bodied patients when possible and blaming it on medical nonsense. So I wrote this play where everyone has noodles for arms and a little girl is born with a hand, and everyone in the play is very concerned with cutting that hand off. Really, for no reason, just because it’s strange to them. And I’m really excited to bring it to Fringe this year and share it with the Providence community.”
The Providence Fringe Festival ran from July 13-26, 2025. The production of H. Avery’s Fatso Goes to McDonald’s (and other short plays) won Audience Favorite Ensemble for this year’s Fringe, which included a performance of Do Not Resuscitate.
