People in Providence 08.27 – Pedestrian Bridge Chess Players

Point Street Bridge Chess Players

Most evenings on the Point Street Bridge, two chess players, Forest and Hugo, can be found facing off against each other and anyone willing to sit down for a game. While talking to the two players about their game, a seven-year-old boy ran across the bridge with his parents and quickly became the center of attention. Forest didn’t hesitate to praise the young visitor, “Yeah, that child is a genius! He beat everyone here. His mother is good. She’s the teacher. His mother beat me. They are very high level.”

Hugo jokingly admitted he’s too old to be a prodigy. He shared, “My doctor said that age is only numbers. I can’t wait to be seventy! My doctor said, ‘Hugo, don’t worry about age’… I [had a] stroke about five years ago. It was on my left side. I’m still getting better and better, so right now I feel seventy percent better.” When asked who he thought would win the game, Hugo pointed to his opponent and admitted with a smile, “He will!”
