Violet I. (Adams) Tierney
89, of Coventry, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at Kent Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late Albert J. Tierney. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Mabel (Williams) Adams, Sr.
Violet worked as a group home manager for the J. Arthur Trudeau Memorial Center, and later for Home Instead, Rhode Island In-Home Senior Care. Violet cared for people all of her adult life as a career and as a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was known by many names and titles but mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother were her proudest titles. She celebrated every birth of a grandchild or great grandchild as if it were the first. She loved playing cards and board games with her family. She taught all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the love of these games. Every family event ended with a boisterous card or board game with her right in the middle of it. Don’t cheat and follow the rules were her rules and she was not a good loser. She enjoyed her gameshows, puzzle books and reading. You always knew where she was between 7pm-8pm, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy time. She was the keeper of everyone’s secrets, as long as she knew it was a secret, if not, your news was fair game to spread! Her happiest moments were sitting back at family events and watching her family just be together. She loved fiercely and deeply and was a mama bear right til the end.
Violet is survived by her loving children, Bruce M. Tierney, Judith A. Tierney, Catherine I. Tierney, Kevin A. Tierney, Kelly M. Tierney and Margaret C. Provoyeur; cherished grandchildren, Christine, Michael, Erica, Jamie, Kevin Jr., Jennifer, Scott Jr., Nicole, Meghan, Danielle and Alexandria. She is also survived by 27 great-grandchildren.
