James D. Clayton, Sr., 78, of Providence, RI died at Miriam Hospital surrounded by his son, James Clayton Jr., and brother, Frederick Clayton. He was the husband of the late Ernestine Clayton.
He was born in Providence, RI on October 13, 1947, the son of the late John and Edith Clayton. He honored his civic duty and served in the United States Army after high school. Following his time in the Army, he was self-employed for many years. He would later work for First Realty as a maintenance supervisor for multiple sites until retirement. His love of music and love of people facilitated his DJ career post retirement and he was well known throughout the DJ community as “DJ Clayton”. James was a dedicated member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Providence. He proudly served the veteran community as a member and Past Commander of The American Legion Armstrong/Gladding Post 69. He was also a dedicated member of the Cape Verdean Progressive Center in East Providence. If you had the opportunity to know “DJ Clayton”, you know he cared for his community and would greet you with a kind smile, joke and/or words of encouragement.
James is survived by his son(s), Frederick Clayton of Virginia Beach, VA. James D. Clayton, Jr. of Huntersville, NC; 4 grandchildren, Mahogany (Marlow) Charite of Delray, Fl, Jalah (TJ) Blackmon of Charlotte, NC, Danielle and Miles Clayton of Huntersville, NC, and one great granddaughter, Journi Celine Blackmon. He is the brother of Frederick Clayton and the late John Clayton, Jr.
