Philanthropic Giving

There are several ways to support our nonprofit newsroom that have additional tax advantages. The Providence Eye recommends that you consult your own tax advisor before making any personal financial decisions.

Gifts from Donor-Advised Funds

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, The Providence Eye is eligible to receive charitable gifts through donor-advised funds (DAF).  To make a gift through your DAF, contact your financial/legal advisor or your DAF representative to recommend a grant to The Providence Eye. If possible, please include your contact information with your gift so that we can thank you for your generosity. Your DAF administrator may require the following information:

Organization’s Legal Name: The Providence Eye
EIN: : 92-3116761
Mailing Address:
The Providence Eye
498 Pine Street
Providence, RI 02907

Limitations to donating through a donor-advised fund:

  • Donors cannot use their DAF to pay off an already existing debt or obligation.
  • Gifts from DAFs have already received tax deductions and thus do not qualify for any goods or services.

IRA charitable rollover

If you are 70 1/2 or older, you can receive a tax benefit when you distribute funds directly from your IRA to The Providence Eye. This option is also referred to as a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD for short.

Advantages to you:

  • The IRA Charitable Rollover permits you to make donations directly to charitable organizations such as The Providence Eye from your IRA without counting the distribution as part of your AGI and, consequently, without paying taxes on it.
  • You can receive a tax benefit regardless of whether you itemize deductions or take the standard deduction on your income tax return.
  • The distribution can count toward your required minimum distribution for the year.

To qualify:

  • You must be 70½ or older.
  • Distributions can only be made from traditional Individual Retirement Accounts or Roth IRAs. Charitable donations from 403(b) plans, 401(k) plans, pension plans, and other retirement plans are ineligible for the tax-free treatment. Distribution must be made directly from the IRA trustee payable to The Providence Eye or another qualified public charity.
  • Your total combined charitable IRA rollover contributions are limited to $111,000 per year. (Married couples may be able to contribute up to $222,000.)
  • Qualified Charitable Distributions from an IRA must go directly to a public charity or nonprofit. Contributions to donor-advised funds and private foundations generally do not qualify.
  • You cannot receive any goods or services in exchange for your Qualified Charitable Distribution.
  • You must receive an acknowledgement from the nonprofit recognizing your donation as a Qualified Charitable Distribution.

 Gifts of Appreciated Stock

Stock donations to The Providence Eye are a great way to support nonprofit, local journalism and the other programs you enjoy. If your stock was held for more than 12 months, you’ll receive a two-fold tax savings:

  • You receive a tax deduction based on the full fair market value of your stock on the date of your gift.
  •  You won’t pay capital gains tax on the increase in your stock’s value.
