Marilyn (Withington) Fernandes,78, known lovingly as Marilyn, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at Hope Hospice in Providence, surrounded by the dignity and care that marked the final chapter of her life. Born on July 26, 1947, in Providence, Rhode Island, she lived a life defined by kindness, quiet strength, and devotion to the people and routines she cherished.
Marilyn was the daughter of the late George E. and Jean (Hayward) Withington, III. She was also the beloved mother of D.J. Fernandes, Jr., and the treasured grandmother of Bianca Ruiz. She was the sister of the late Sally Withington, Leslie Ferland, Judy Withington, and Anne. Her family was central to her life, and she carried those bonds with her always, offering love, encouragement, and steady support in ways both large and small. Those who knew her will remember her as a friendly, thoughtful, and courageous woman whose presence brought comfort and warmth.
A lifelong Rhode Islander, Marilyn spent over 30years in East Providence before making Providence her home for the last five years of her life. She was deeply rooted in the community she knew best, and her life reflected the values of hard work, loyalty, and perseverance. For more than 30 years, she worked in the Diagnostic Imaging Department at Rhode Island Hospital, where she was respected for her dedication and reliability. Her long career was a testament to her commitment to helping others, and she took pride in the work she did and the relationships she formed along the way. Her colleagues knew her as someone who could be counted on, someone who met each day with steadiness and grace.
Outside of work, Marilyn found joy in simple pleasures that brought her peace and satisfaction. She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, and working on jigsaw puzzles, pastimes that reflected both her curiosity and her patience. She was also an avid sports fan who especially enjoyed tennis, softball, and racquetball. Whether she was following a match, discussing a game, or appreciating the skill and energy of competition, she brought enthusiasm and interest to the sports she loved. These interests were part of the rhythm of her life and gave her many moments of enjoyment over the years.
Marilyn will be remembered not only for what she did, but for who she was. She was friendly in manner, thoughtful in spirit, and courageous in the face of life’s challenges. Her strength was quiet but unmistakable, and her kindness left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know her. She had a way of making others feel seen and valued, and her presence was a source of reassurance to her family and friends.
Her life was one of devotion, resilience, and care. She gave generously of herself through her work, her family, and her everyday interactions. Though she is no longer with us, the memory of Marilyn Fernandes will remain alive in the hearts of those who loved her. Her legacy is found in the family she cherished, the years of service she gave, and the gentle, enduring example she set for all who knew her.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her calling hours on Saturday, June 6, 2026 from 11:00am-1:00pm in the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME , 901 Broadway, East Providence, RI.
