Michael R. Lamar

Michael R. Lamar, 68, formerly of Providence, RI, died on January 28, 2026 from Lewy body dementia.
Michael leaves his wife Joan Ryan Lamar and three children, Julia Lamar Godshalk and her husband Tim who live and work in Chicago; Jake Lamar who lives and works in London; and Henry Lamar who lives and works in Massachusetts.
Michael was predeceased by his mother, Milagros, and also leaves behind his father, Dr. Carlos Lamar, and four siblings, Dr. Rebecca Lamar Cali, Vivian Lamar Zini, Andrew Lamar, and Atty. Fred Lamar.
Michael was born in New Orleans, LA, and grew up in Madison, WI, and Charleston, SC. He studied art at the University of South Carolina, then spent two years at the Penland School of Craft in North Carolina, and went on to receive an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 1984. He was a co-founder of Butter + Toast Ceramics and Altamira Lighting, two design/crafts businesses headquartered in Warren, RI, that produced unique tableware and lighting. Their wares have graced homes not only in Rhode Island but all across the country. Michael was a member of the RISD adjunct faculty in both Industrial Design and Foundation Studies for more than twenty-five years. He loved teaching and was beloved by hundreds of students. He was generous to all with his time, creativity, and knowledge.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Michael will take place at St. Pius V Church, 240 Eaton Street, Providence, RI on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at 10 am. Burial will immediately follow at Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery, Little Compton, RI.
The family is grateful to Joan’s sisters who supported Joan in caring for Michael this last year and a half and for the wonderful caregivers who provided care for Michael in his last two months of life.
