The Rev. Norman J. Catir, Jr.

The Rev. Norman J. Catir, Jr., of Providence, RI, died Sunday evening, June 21, of complications from a fall, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he had been vacationing with his wife of 62 years, Zulette (n. Masson). He was born in 1932 to parents Norman J. Catir, Sr., and Ruth (n. Symmes) Catir, and grew up in Portland, Maine. Educated at Trinity College, Hartford (B.A., M.A.) and the Berkeley Divinity School in New Haven (M.Div.), Fr. Catir was ordained a priest in 1958, and served parishes of the Episcopal Church in Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, and Maine. His longest tenure was as the fifth rector of the celebrated Church of the Transfiguration (the “Little Church Around the Corner”) in midtown Manhattan, from 1971 until his retirement in 1998. As a priest, and as a member of many church and civic organizations, he touched countless lives and will be sorely missed, especially by his widow, his godchildren, and dear friends near and far. His requiem will be at 1pm on Thursday July 2 at S. Stephen’s on George Street, with burial to follow at Swan Point. In lieu of flowers, please donate to S. Stephen’s Church lighting system.
