Laura Crum was born on May 5, 1926 in Providence, Rhode Island to Sadie and Nathaniel Hyman. She lived a life rooted in faith, family, and service, leaving a legacy of love, joy, and unwavering devotion to her community.

Laura was predeceased by her beloved husband, Stanley T. Crum Sr., after 65 years of marriage.

She was also predeceased by her cherished siblings: her brothers Robert I., John T., James E., George H., Clarence N., Frank L., Richard A., and Warren W., and her sisters Dolly Perry, Mary Brown, Almater Hyman, and Annabelle Taylor.

On March 18, 1950, Laura married Stanley T. Crum in Providence, Rhode Island. Together, they built a loving family and were blessed with four children: Sharon Mazyck, Vanessa Crum, Stanley Crum Jr. (Alice), and Jeffry Crum (Theresa). Laura leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Cardia Rhodes, Michael Banks, Savonna Crum, and Quinn Crum; as well as her adored eight great-grandchildren and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

She was a proud graduate of Central High School, Class of 1945. Laura devoted her early years to being a stay-at-home mother, nurturing her family with patience, grace, and unwavering love. In her later years, she became a teaching assistant at Pleasant View School, where she lovingly supported children with special needs. She also worked at the West End Community Center, opening the doors early each morning to ensure that parents could safely drop off their children for care before heading to work. Additionally, she worked at Central High School, further reflecting her lifelong commitment to education, service and giving back to her community.

From a young age, Laura was deeply committed to her faith. She was a lifelong member of Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church, where her service spanned decades. As a Mother of the Church, she faithfully served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Church Secretary for over 25 years, Stewardess, Steward, Trustee, and Deaconess. She was also a devoted member of the Richard Allen Chorus for more than 70 years, sharing her faith joyfully through song.

Laura was an active member of the St. Martin de Porres Senior Center and the John Hope Settlement House, where she remained engaged and deeply connected within her community. Those who knew Laura will forever remember her joyful spirit. She would dance her way into church, praising God with a radiant smile that lit up the room.

Known for her spirited yet loving nature, she was immensely proud of her children and all of their accomplishments. She was approachable, sharp- witted, quick to say yes, and always ready to offer comfort and encouragement. One of her most cherished phrases was, “See you later, alligator,” followed by her playful reply, “After a while, crocodile,”accompanied by her signature smile.

Laura Crum’s life was a testament to her undying faith, love, and service to others. Her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
