Providence is poised to take back control of the schools? [See Matt McDermott’s September 30 op-ed, “Providence is Poised to Regain Control of Its Schools. The Choices We Make Will Define the City for a Generation.”]

The school department has had over five years to come up with a plan to change the schools and what have they done? I see the usual blame on teachers’ unions but I do not see any rethinking of how education should proceed in our schools. We missed the chance during COVID to radically rethink and we have missed it again.

I have a grandchild who just began a French immersion public school in St. Paul. There are other languages, arts, science “magnet” schools. The government there wanted to make public schools work for its citizens while retaining a middle-class base. What has Providence done, planned, or suggested?
