Daleth, Kat, Riley, and Zak | Taste of 02908
Kat: We are all Providence College (PC) undergraduate students. Riley, Daleth, and I are all juniors and Zak is a senior. We’re here specifically because we’re part of an undergraduate research group at PC called the NERLab, the Neighborly Engagement Research Lab. For the past two years, we’ve all been working on ways that Providence College can improve their relationship with the surrounding 02908 communities. We show up to a lot of community events like this, see familiar faces, and also try to share these events on campus so that it bridges the gap between the campus and the community. We’re all really excited to be here. The food is so good. The weather is beautiful.
Do you want to stay in Providence after you graduate?
Daleth: I would love to stay in Providence after I graduate.
Riley: I would love to as well. I never thought about it before coming here. But I’ve always loved Rhode Island and being immersed in Providence has been amazing. I really love it here.
Kat: Beforehand it was not the plan but now as we’ve gotten more engaged in this work it feels like you have to stay, in a way. It feels like the right thing to do is to stay and continue to invest in this relationship.
Zak: I’m not sure, but like what Kat said, being involved in the community for the last three years and trying to take ownership of being a member of the community, trying to contribute in that way, has been really meaningful to me at least. So, you know, who knows what the future holds.
Riley: Exactly. Even if I don’t end up here, I know I’m going to be visiting and making sure I’m still maintaining those relationships and showing up at these kinds of events, because this is awesome.
What do you hope to do post-grad?
Daleth: I would love to go to law school after I graduate. I hope to be an immigration lawyer. Roger Williams University Law School is the only law school in the state of Rhode Island, but it’s a really good school for what I would want to do. So that would be ideal.
Kat: I’ve always been interested in nonprofit management work and recently gotten more interested in event planning and things like that. Currently, I’m interning over at Waterfire, which has been a really cool experience and has helped me get further involved in Providence culture. Some sort of nonprofit management position would be the ideal for me.
Riley: I’m a Creative Writing and Public and Community Service Studies double major, and both of those have opened my mind to literary journalism, maybe even political journalism. I’m not exactly sure what I want to do, but I know that I want to write.
Zak: Right now, I’m really interested in community development and economic development, specifically working with businesses and organizations. I would like to do something in the nonprofit realm.
Annie Deng is a student studying Literary Arts and Biochemistry at Brown University, looking to explore the Providence community and share the diverse perspectives and experiences she encounters along the way. In her free time, she enjoys doing photography and volunteering at the zoo.
