In Providence, one of the most frequently asked questions pertains to overnight parking within the city. Here, we provide a comprehensive guide to everything you need to know on this subject.

Can You Park Overnight?

Parking on any street in Providence overnight, between 2 AM and 5 AM, without the requisite Overnight Parking Permit, is prohibited. The city operates the Overnight Permit Parking Program, which grants residents the privilege to park their vehicles overnight on designated residential streets, provided they possess valid permits.

Eligibility and Application Process

To ascertain your eligibility for a permit, you’ll need to provide proof of residency, which may include a driver’s license, mortgage documentation, rental agreement, or utility bill. Any outstanding City of Providence parking fines related to your vehicle must be settled prior to obtaining a parking permit. Each household is permitted to register up to two vehicles for overnight parking, necessitating separate applications for each car.

Participation requires valid vehicle registration, and applications can be submitted online or in person. Permits are available for purchase at either the Traffic Engineering or Municipal Court locations.

Cost of Permits and Guest Passes

The cost associated with permits varies depending on vehicle registration. For cars registered within Providence, the fee is $100, whereas cars registered outside Providence incur a cost of $200. Additionally, residents holding permits have the option to acquire guest passes at an annual fee of $25. These passes permit visitors to park on the street for up to five nights per month.
