Julia Mae (Edwards) Matthews peacefully departed this life on May 6, 2026 surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on July 16,1942, in Montgomery, Alabama, Julia was the daughter of the late Lucille Kenner and Joseph Edwards. Though she was born in the South, she lovingly made Rhode Island her second home and built a life centered around family, compassion, and caring for others.
Julia worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Bannister House, where she found great fulfillment in helping and comforting her patients . Caring for others was simply who she was. She carried a gentle spirit, a strong heart, and a warmth that made people feel welcomed and loved.
Julia will be remembered for the deep love that she had for her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored beyond measure. She constantly encouraged them to be strong, motivated, and proud of who they are. Nothing brought her more joy than spending time with the people she loved most.
She expressed her love through cooking, always preparing meals that brought family and friends together. Her home was filled with laughter, good food, music, and love. Julia enjoyed dancing to the sounds of 70s music and relaxing with her favorite Western television shows. Her presence brought comfort, joy, and togetherness to everyone around her.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving children Ronald A. Edwards, Willie Edwards, and James T. Edwards., all of Providence, Rhode Island. She was a devoted and cherished grandmother to Michael G. Clark, Kyleah C. Edwards Benton, James T. Hazard, Ariona M. Eaddy, and Delon C. Moore. She is also survived by her youngest siblings: Jessie Edwards and Abigail and Bernadette Kenner, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Julia was preceded in death by her siblings Billy, Roy, Ricky, Joseph, Queen, and Daisy Edwards.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to her devoted caretakers Matilda and Marie-Ange, whose patience, kindness, and loving care brought Julia comfort and happiness for many years. Julia always looked forward to their visits and truly considered them gifts from heaven. The family also wishes to thank the staff at Elmwood Adult Day Health Care Center for the love, joy, and sense if community they provided to Julia. Through their care, she found not only support, but another family.
Julia’s love, strength, and beautiful spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
