To the Editor,
I much appreciated Steve Stycos’ February 19 Eye article, “Providence Rail Hub Thriving, But Future Uncertain,” calling needed attention to rail service to Providence.
I note the MBTA has weekend passes (which can be bought on the train), and for $10 you can use all its commuter lines all day both Saturday and Sunday. Thus day trips to destinations such as Scituate, Concord, Rockport, Lowell are possible at low cost, and all those trains carry bicycles for no extra charge making trips possible to enjoy the Charles River bikeways, the Minuteman bikeway to Lexington and more. Check it out at mbta.com.
Also, Amtrak – already electrified – can reduce climate emissions for corridor travel as much as 92% compared to flying. Too bad this seems to be ignored by our state’s climate bureaucracy. All we ever hear are ads saying “Fly RI.”
